Welcome to Deadline’s Oscar live blog, and thanks to Mike for, for the first time ever, kicking things off with a compliment to me in the intro above. I guess miracles do happen.
Hollywood, and Deadline’s live blog, returned for the 96th Academy Awards. The sunny skies, and the fact that the 10 Best Picture nominees include several that audiences have actually seen, bodes well for the festivities. Jimmy Kimmel was back as host, and because Donald Trump remains former president, there is every chance that the Red States won’t consider the event polarized and worth watching … all signs point to a ratings rebound.
Joining Mike Fleming Jr on the live blog was his usual sparring partner Joe Utichi, who turned his Oppenheimer AwardsLine cover story into English (“Thank you Joe and AwardsLine team for the grammatical triage,” says Mike). We also had cameos from our awards expert, Pete Hammond, and Baz Bamigboye, who are both in the room at the Dolby Theatre.
Read on for how the night went.
Welcome to Deadline’s Oscar live blog, and thanks to Mike for, for the first time ever, kicking things off with a compliment to me in the intro above. I guess miracles do happen.
Baz and Pete are on site, Mike’s in LA, and I’m in Deadline’s London command center with Film Editor, Damon Wise and one of Deadline’s critic team, Stephanie Bunbury.
Pete has an image of the now-customary Jimmy Kimmel snack boxes from in the room.
Baz had trouble getting to the event. “My Uber driver threw me outta the vehicle because he said, ‘I’m Egyptian and I’m scared to take you any further.’ He canceled the trip and left me on the sidewalk to take another car.”
As always we’ll be bringing the best of your comments into the blog, so feel free to join in on our conversation.
