Sen. Katie Britt may have been the butt of the joke on Saturday Night Live over the weekend, but the freshman politician from Alabama found it “awesome” that Scarlett Johansson played her in the cold open.
While talking with with Sen. Ted Cruz on his podcast Wednesday, Britt said she was “pretty pumped” at the site of Johansson in her green shirt and diamond crucifix necklace. The much-anticipated skit was in response to Britt’s bizarre State of the Union response.
“I’ve got to be honest with you, a bingo card for 2024 for Katie Britt. I did not have this on it, right?” Britt told Cruz. “It certainly didn’t have Scarlett Johansson playing me. … We were talking to the kids about all of it and they were like, ‘Oh my gosh, mom’ …. and I said, ‘You know, look. It could have been worse. You have Black Widow.’ They bring in someone from the Avengers to play me in the cold open. I’m here for it.”
Cruz used the conversation to remind listeners that he, too, has been impersonated “a bunch of times” on SNL — but not by a “hot” actor like Johansson or even Tom Cruise. SNL once called upon Aidy Bryant to play the Texas senator after the whole dust-up involving his trip to Cancun.
“They had her in like cornrows and sipping a margarita, and it was hysterical,” Cruz recalled. “I laughed. I thought it was awesome. And by the way, Aidy looks pretty good in the beard.”
Johansson filmed the skit from the table of a spotless kitchen. As Britt, she told viewers: “Good evening America, my name is Katie Britt, and I have the honor of serving the people of the great state of Alabama. But tonight, I’ll be auditioning for the part of scary mom.”
She went on: “I’ll be performing an original monologue called ‘This country is hell.’ You see, I’m not just a senator. I’m a wife, a mother, and the craziest bitch in the Target parking lot.”
